During 2013-2014, I used visual patterns with my students two days a week as part of our warm-up routine. I shared our "pattern talks" at MathTalks.net.

I use Randomizer.org to help me quickly and randomly assign the patterns to students. The generated list can be opened in Excel also. For example, I have 39 students, and I want to assign 2 patterns to each student, but I want each kid to have 3 patterns to choose from. There are currently 111 visual patterns available, so I fill out the form like this:
